Noel’s Boss Speech on his Retirement

Listen to this Post. Powered by iSpeech.org

Our Prexy Noel Basilio is now joining the ranks of the second lifers. He opted for an early retirement because he envies the good things that Vincent and the others him now enjoy. In this long run, this is a wonderful way to have life. His Boss, Tom Rak’s gave Noel an endearing speech recollecting the days when they were both young as well as the contributions of Noel. We are very proud of you Noel. And we are glad that you finally decided to take life more than work. Now, we can work together on the Delta Clan and we have plenty of good ideas on how we can achieve this. Good luck once again!!! We love you.

Meloto in CEO Summit

Listen to this Post. Powered by iSpeech.org

tony-melotoTHIS coming November 13-14, the APEC CEO Summit 2009 will bring together more than 800 of the world’s top business leaders to Singapore to meet with leaders of some of the Pacific Rim’s most powerful nations.

The chairman of Gawad Kalinga, Tony Meloto, has been invited to be one of the speakers in the two-day summit at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre. Since engagement between the public and private sector is the highlight of the summit, interactive open dialogue and panel discussions will pave the way for the alignment of APEC policies and goals with global business, in a powerful forum where insights and ideas will be shared in preparation for the post-crisis world.

The following APEC Leaders have confirmed their attendance: President Barack Obama of the United States of America, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd of Australia, President Michelle Bachelet of Chile, President Hu Jintao of the People’s Republic of China, Chief Executive Donald Tsang of Hong Kong, China, President Dr H Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia, Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama of Japan, President Lee Myung-Bak of the Republic of Korea, Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib Razak of Malaysia, President Felipe Calderon of Mexico, Prime Minister John Key of New Zealand, President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva of Thailand and President Nguyen Minh Triet of Viet Nam.

Along with Meloto, over 1,000 of the world’s top business leaders are converging in Singapore for the only international forum that offers interaction with leaders of the most powerful nations in the Pacific Rim. The CEO Summit will focus on addressing the economic crisis and key global issues. These include topics to prepare for the recovery of the global economy, strengthening corporate governance, harnessing the economics of climate change, leveraging on the power of sovereign wealth funds and multilateral institutions, as well as discussing the shape of things to come in the new global economic landscape.
Meloto’s talk about Gawad Kalinga in the CEO Summit will showcase GK as the global model of social development consistent with the UN Millennium Development Goals that seeks to reduce poverty by half by 2015. Since its launching six years ago, GK has transformed over 1700 poverty ridden and crime-laden communities throughout the Philippines. Emerging as the Asian model for community development and poverty alleviation, GK has provided successful program templates that have been replicated in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Cambodia. The Delta Clan supports housing for the poor and plans are on the way to support Gawad Kalinga in the forthcoming GR 2010.

Listen to this Post. Powered by iSpeech.org

Jun Jun Maliksi, one of Delta Clan’s founders and mainstay during his time in MIT is 60. He celebrated his birthday with wife Mila and some Brods including Art in the Legend Villa Hotel last oct 24, 2009. He is now a PEE and a Professor in Tacloban. Mila and Jun are blessed with two daughters and two sons. The daughters are now based in Singapore doing some IT works. Our other stalwarts, Ed Huelgas and Ivan Velez joined Jun in wishing him more years to come. Don’t we all brods and Sis?

Jun and Mila will join us in the GR 2010. June is very keen to touch base with the other Deltans who have likewise excelled in their own respective fields. See you all then!

Back to School

Listen to this Post. Powered by iSpeech.org

academicearthCan you back to school? Sure why not? And not in the same places as MIT, US and PWU. How about any of the Ivy League schools of Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, MIT, and Berkeley? Yes you can! You can even attend several courses in different schools. And this is even if you don’t have the means to fly and stay in the US. Or even if you are staying in Qatar, Dubai, or Tondo. How? If only we can have permanent videocams on the walls of these schools, then we can have their professors streamed into the comforts of our homes, work places, offices, internet cafes and anywhere we like them to. And only at the time we prefer. Fortunately, this is now possible as universities learn to structure themselves for global learning.

March 24, 2009 is an interesting date for learners and learning centers worldwide. It was the day when the AcademicEarth.org was officially launched. Like YouTube, it features videos. videos of what? Well, video lectures of credible professors from world-class universities. You can watch, listen, take notes or even download over 1,500 videotaped lectures from the best universities in the US. All for free! Continue reading Back to School

What is Participation?

Listen to this Post. Powered by iSpeech.org

design 2 copyThere’s a really big push to gather as much Brods and Sis to join our GR 2010. I felt this after reading Clarisse’s call and prayers from the heart that she posted in our YahooGroup. I am also aware and greatly admire the little and more often unpublicized heroism of many nameless Brods and Sis who are going around in search for the lost ones….sometimes even despite the stormy waeather. Deep in their hearts is a desire to see us all together again in one big event, in one big place and in one memorable time.

Together with our officers, I am joining all the Deltans in this global call for participation. It does not mean that you have to be physically present in 2010 to participate. Sure, this is the best way to do it. But some have real world hurdles like jobs, families, finances, and whatever many others. A Brod told me that the price of actually being present may be too high for some. Then, he opted for “patak-patak” (drops-drops). He made five installments and in the next meeting, he and his wife’s participation will be paid in full. Clearly some old Deltan strategy still works… and continue to work even in today’s difficult times.

Interestingly, there are many other ways to participate as well. We call them, silent participation (as in silent business partner). Consider sharing your time for the event’s success. How? Well, here are ten plus one examples: Continue reading What is Participation?

A Heart Warming Story

DSC04038

One Sunday noon, October 11, 2009, wearing Sunday dress after church activities, I dropped at “Kelynn Doors” woodmaking industry shop near my place at Sta. Rosa, Pilar, Bataan to pay bills for the fabrication of handmade carving doors for my on-going house construction. After paying the bills, the staff attendant asked me If I want to meet the owner of the Kelynn Doors who resides in Malolos, Bulacan. I said, Why not? Then, there is man crossing the street approaching to my location, wearing short pant, in casual attire, very cool as he walks, slim, white hair. Then, the staff attendant introduced to me that he is the owner of this establishment. Conversation now follows.
Benjie: Kamusta po?
Ed: Ok naman.
Benjie: Ako po un cliente ninyo na nagpapagawa ng mga pintuan dito na nakatira dito lang po sa malapit na lugar, batungbakal subdivision.
Ed: (nod his head)
Benjie: (continue talking)… actually, marami na po akong napagawa dito sa inyo at yung iba pa ea sa december pa kailangan, maayos naman po ang gawa. Taga Malolos Continue reading A Heart Warming Story
